BPB were invited to assist our client in the extensive redevelopment of a recently purchased property in Wherwell, along the River Test. The property had received little attention over the preceding decades due to the age of the former owner and was in much need of attention.

Sited within a conservation area a series of applications were submitted to achieve the end result. The first application addressed the house, with a second application submitted upon completion of the works to provide a small garden summer house and open sided car port.

The design knocked down 50% of the existing footprint and removed almost all internal walls. A new wing was then built with minimal increase to the original footprint. The final layout provided a new central entrance with views through to the garden and river beyond, the kitchen and living room were then located either side of the entrance with patio doors out to the terrace. Four bedrooms were then located on the first floor, two of them being ensuite with walk-in-wardrobes.

With its prominent location on the River Test the works sought to open-up the view to the south-east over the long garden leading down to the River. The introduction of glazing to this sensitive elevation was constrained by the conservation officer but through projected roofs glazed balconies were consented.

The property has now transformed from an aging and neglected painted brick property to a contemporary property with slate roof, dark cladding and large windows to the view beyond.
