Welcome back to Ask the Architect!
It seems this series is proving quite popular, so here’s another question we’re frequently asked:
Are there any other consultants or key stakeholders involved in a typical project?
This is a great question, and the answer varies depending on the project. As I’ve mentioned in previous episodes, we offer a bespoke service, meaning each project has different requirements. However, as a general rule, most projects involve more than just an architect.
Key Consultants to Consider
If you’re planning work on your home, office, shop, or any other building, you should allow for:
- A Structural Engineer – Essential for most projects, particularly where structural changes are involved.
- An Ecologist – Increasingly necessary, as councils place greater emphasis on protecting bats and other protected species when assessing planning applications.
- An Energy Consultant – With stricter building regulations and the push towards carbon neutrality, more projects now require energy efficiency assessments.
Additional Consultants (Project-Specific)
Depending on the complexity of your project, you may also need:
- A Party Wall Surveyor – If your work affects a shared wall with a neighbouring property.
- A Quantity Surveyor – To assist with costings, particularly for larger projects.
- Other Specialists – Depending on the nature of the site, you may require input from flood risk assessors, arboricultural consultants (for trees), or heritage consultants for listed buildings.
Summary
For most projects, in addition to an architect, you will almost certainly need a structural engineer and are likely to need an energy consultant and ecologist. Other specialists may be required depending on the project’s complexity and location.
